Better services sees hospitals, clinics rewarded

Public health facilities throughout the province were rewarded at a lavish ceremony at the East London International Convention Centre on Thursday evening.

Health MEC Dr Phumza Dyantyi’s excellence awards celebrated clinics and hospitals that had excelled over the decade at the Vodacom-sponsored event.

Vodacom Business CEO Vuyani Jarana said the network aimed to provide technology to improve the health sector.

“The partnership aims to improve the sector through technology which can reduce waiting times and other factors, but 75% comes from the health professionals with their human touch.”

Dyantyi said the awards were reinstated after the department noticed the positive developments in the health sector.

“There has been so much negativity around the health department, but now it’s time for us to acknowledge their improvements and celebrate their growth and developments at each clinic or hospital, and also to inspire and motivate others that have not performed so well.”

About 20 health facilities were rewarded for their cleanliness, reduced waiting periods and improved quality of service, as well as other factors.

The glitzy ceremony was attended by Eastern Cape premier Phumulo Masualle, Buffalo City Metro mayor Alfred Mtsi, provincial social development MEC Nancy Sihlwayi and keynote speaker Dr Nontlantla Makhaya from the national department of health.

Makhaya commended the provincial department for celebrating the achievements made by the health institutions and improving their quality of service.

He emphasised the importance of service quality and the need for good role models.

Among the awards handed out, Frere Hospital was named best performing tertiary hospital. The best performing emergency medical services was Burgesdorp, while Khutsong was recognised as the top performing TB hospital.

The most improved hospital was Flagstaff’s Holy Cross Hospital, and the best clinic award went to Mthatha’s Gura clinic.

Nelson Mandela Hospital in Mthatha was awarded the best academic hospital accolades, while PE’s Livingstone Hospital was awarded for improvement. — mbalit@dispatch.co.za
