ANC‚ DA invoke memory of Mandela during Vuwani debate

The Minister of State Security on Tuesday said the “entire nation was brought to tears when more than 20 schools went up in smoke in Vuwani two weeks ago”.

“Words cannot express the untold suffering that has been meted by humanity on young people‚ our future‚” David Mahlobo told the National Assembly during a snap debate on the violent protests in Limpopo.

He attributed the “violence and destruction of property seen in Vuwani and surrounding villages is driven by few individuals‚ in leadership positions‚ whose economic and political interests are threatened by the process of demarcation”.

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Kevin Mileham‚ however‚ latched on to the arrests at the weekend of an an ANC ward councillor in “for his role in the arson in which more than 24 schools were burnt to the ground at a cost of more than R750-million”.

“This again demonstrates how the ANC of today has changed. It is no longer the ANC of Nelson Mandela‚ an ANC that cared for the people and the education of our children‚” he said.

“Instead of ending the violent protest‚ the ANC councillor added fuel to the fire. While we welcome the arrest of this ANC councillor and those implicated in this destruction of property‚ we call on the ANC to publicly condemn the actions of their councillor and take disciplinary steps against him in their appropriate structures and suspend him from attending any public gatherings for fear of further incitement.”

Mahlobo had earlier listed some of the damage caused during the protests: 26 schools damaged (11 totally burned down and 15 partially burned and damaged); one SAPS trailer burned‚ one purification system damaged‚ two trucks belonging to a contractor burned‚ three Department of Public Works trucks burned‚ 18 private vehicles windows smashed; five SAPS vehicles smashed by stones‚ four burned houses‚ one tribal authority office and a satellite police station damaged.
