Soccer club members held for killing woman in village

Sixten men mostly soccer players and managers have been arrested for assaulting and set alight a badly wounded woman who they accused of witchcraft and killing of two of the players.

The Rhawutini village near Libode, which used to be peaceful with very low levels of crime, has now become village of fear with women fearing for their lives and they do not know if they would be the next victims.

The accused are mostly members of the local soccer club, Young Aces FC, and most are relatives of the deceased woman.

Nogcinile Tshele, 61, was hacked with bush knives, stabbed with sharpened iron bars and the badly wounded and defenceless grandmother was then set alight in  full view of her two young grandsons.

Tshele was with her  grandsons when a heavily armed group of soccer players and sports fans arrived and  surrounded the yard, forcefully removing the fences and later set two rondavels alight before they killed her.

The community and the headman Mlandeli Ndabatha strongly condemned the crime and said that all the suspects must be handed over to police.

Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Deneo Koena said  the accuseds' ages ranged between 20 and 46 years old  and were charged for murder, arson and malicious damage to property. ''They are to appear in court soon,'' said Koena.
