Internationally acclaimed DJ Black Coffee has always dreamt of taking local music to the world and for his efforts, the South African Music Awards (Samas) will be honouring him next month.
Black Coffee, whose real name is Nathi Maphumulo, is recognised as a trailblazer, taking local music to the world.
He won Best Breakthrough Artist Award at Ibiza’s DJ Awards and has travelled the globe on a 17-country tour spanning four continents in five months.
Maphumulo said he was humbled by the Samas gesture and that it had never crossed his mind that one day such an honour would befall him for taking South African sounds to the world.
“It was always my dream and vision to export our music culture to the world,” he said.
Maphumulo is currently on a European and US summer tour until September.
“I am also working on my new album, to be released towards the end of the year,” he said.
Last month, he was one of the main attractions at the prestigious Coachella Festival in California, US.
He graced the cover of MixMag, the first African DJ to do so, and was named the authoritative dance music magazine’s Star of the Year.
He was also featured by dance luminary Pete Tong on his popular BBC1 radio show.
Maphumulo called on the youth to trust in themselves and their abilities.
“I urge our youth to understand that the future of our country is in their hands, to leave the past behind, know that they can be anything they want to be and the world is their oyster,” he said.
The 22nd edition of the Samas takes place at the Durban International Convention Centre on June 4 and will be broadcast live on SABC1.
