Taxis damaged after violence spreads in Mthatha region

Three taxis were damaged today after being pelted with stones allegedly by a rival taxi rank as taxi violence in Mthatha spread to other parts.

Golden Egg taxi rank and their Magadla counterparts clashed earlier today over the Bhongweni operating route.

No one was injured in the recent taxi violence. This comes after taxi driver Simo Tshangela was gunned down last week while transporting passengers from Mthatha to Libode.

Today's violence, which saw two Toyota Quantums and a Toyota Condor from the Golden Egg taxi rank damaged was a continuation of Tuesday evening's violence.

Both ranks are affiliated to the Mthatha Taxi Owners' Association (MTOA).

Before being locked behind closed doors in a meeting with MTOA in an effort to resolve the dispute, the two ranks formed two groups about 1km from each other.

They carried sticks, baseball bats and pangas.

Police who intervened on Tuesday continue to monitor the area.
