Cassper and Riky Rick talk SA hip-hop culture: 'We're here to inspire'

Rappers Cassper and Riky Rick weigh in on the newly-shaped identity of South African hip-hop culture in a new documentary‚ Born Free: Hip-Hop in Johannesburg‚ by entertainment music channel NOISEY.

Presented by NOISEY’s Filippa Von Stackelberg‚ the documentary follows Cassper and Riky as they share their stories about how township lifestyles have influenced the type of music that they make.

“My album was made to give kids in the hood hope. A lot of South Africans are inspired by ethnicity‚” Cassper says at the beginning of the documentary.

“I grew up to kwaito music‚ which is a genre that was formed. A lot of South African hip-hop is influenced by kwaito‚” he added‚ pointing out that he stands firm in promoting that culture through his own music.

The 16-minute long clip follows Cassper as he goes back to his hometown Mafikeng‚ where viewers are introduced to his family and friends.

Sharing Cassper’s sentiments‚ Riky explains: “What we are trying to put into our music‚ is to inspire kids wherever they live‚ to come up and to be the hood heroes.”

In addition‚ the documentary features car spinning activities and Pantsula dancing‚ which is part of the township movement that Riky claims “everyone can relate to.”
