Cops in hunt for courier hijackers

East London police were still searching for suspects allegedly involved in a dramatic heist involving a courier van and a white Toyota sedan in Beacon Bay yesterday.

This happened in the afternoon after a Dawn Wing couriers company vehicle was allegedly hijacked by thugs, who later drove it into the quiet suburb to their waiting getaway vehicle.

At the time, the driver of the courier vehicle was locked in the back of his van.

East London police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana confirmed the incident, saying the picture was still emerging.

“A case has been registered at Beacon Bay police station and the information we are getting from the driver is still sketchy.

“We understand that another vehicle, a white Toyota Corolla vehicle was involved,” Tana said.

He said the vehicle was allegedly hijacked at Mopani Road in the same suburb and later driven to Lagoon View Drive.

“The driver, who was not harmed, was put at the back of the vehicle.

“He has reported that up to 11 boxes with computers were taken but we can’t really confirm that until all the information is received,” he said.

Dawn Wing’s East London acting general manager Janine Greess confirmed this, saying her employees were not hurt.

Celize Kriel of Beacon Bay saw the incident.

“It was dramatic. The driver of the courier van was locked at the back of the van and there were parcels all over the road as this was foiled,” she said.

She said a helicopter was also on the scene.

“I believe that could have been a helicopter from a tracking company, it apparently landed on an open field,” Kriel said.

Tana said no one had been arrested as yet but police were following up information.

“The police are also studying CCTV footage to assist in the investigation,” he added.
