East London rappers to set Sama party on fire

Two East London-based rappers who have recently made their debut in the music industry have been invited to perform at the exclusive South Africa Music Awards (Sama) pre-party in Durban tomorrow.

The rappers – Vuo and Kay – are signed under the newly established label, Asanda Empires.

Speaking with the Daily Dispatch yesterday, the musicians said it was all thanks to their label that they were able to secure the performances at the Sama party.

The label has a licensing deal with Universal Music which has seen them releasing music for Asanda Empires.

They have already released two singles for the artists titled Success and Levels.

Stutterheim-born Kay, whose real name is Kamvelihle Kostile, said he did not expect their careers to grow so quickly after releasing their singles.

“We have Universal backing us and now we get to perform at the pre-party for the biggest awards in the country. Not many upcoming artists get that opportunity,” he said.

Vuo, whose real name is Vuyolwethu Raziya, said things weren’t always easy for them as rappers but he was glad there was light at the end of the tunnel.

“We struggled a lot in the beginning and this opportunity we are getting brings light into the music scenes of the Eastern Cape.

“We don’t have to go to Johannesburg to be considered for such performances,” he said.

Label founder Asanda Mabengwana said his aim in starting the label was to help local artists with some of the challenges they faced. He wants to see more musicians succeeding in the business and making a name for themselves nationally while they stay based in the province.

He added he was proud of the artists and the commitment they had shown in their craft.

The rappers leave for Durban today for their performance tomorrow. The 22nd awards take place on Saturday at the Durban International Convention Centre, and will be broadcast live on SABC 1. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
