A group of Eastern Cape women are bravely challenging societal stereotypes on beauty

Society's “ideal” sexy woman has no cellulite, no stretch marks, is skinny and wears conservative clothing.

However, a group of young Eastern Cape women are bravely challenging this tonight when they reveal images of themselves in all their naked glory.

Other challenges included finding time to do the shoots and financing the project. In this his family came to the rescue. His son Jason, who is also a photographer, took some of the images and his wife Enid donated some money to the project.

Fredericks said their biggest challenge was keeping the project a secret.

“I was itching to share the photographs with the world, but we all agreed to only start sharing images once we had reached a certain stage of preparedness. The ladies too, were itching to post their images on social media – but to their credit they kept it all a secret until now,” he said.

Ngumbela said there was a need for a personal conception – and perception – of beauty as it pertains to the self, as well as a narrative that could be used to accompany the images in telling the story of the participants’ journey through life. Each photo in the exhibition features a quote from the woman featured which touches on their involvement in the project.

“Poses are selected by the participants according to their levels of confidence and courage,” she said.
