Taxi operators vow to embark on protest march

The Eastern Cape taxi operators will tomorrow embark in a province-wide protest where they will march to government offices in Bhisho to hand over a petition.

These operators will march as they demand taxi  operating licences from the department of transport.

The South African National Taxi  Council (Santaco) in the province has confirmed this, saying “everything will come to a halt”. Apparently the operators have been told to postpone their march until July as the Eastern Cape tomorrow will hold a Youth Parliament in Bhisho.

Santaco provincial chairperson Noluntu Mahashe said despite difficulties from government, they will go ahead tomorrow. “We were suppose to march on Wednesday but the government stopped us, giving us a later date to march. We've been quiet for far too long, we are going ahead tomorrow,” said Mahashe.

The planned total shut-down tomorrow will affect thousands of commuters as some taxi operators say they will block roads to monitor those operators who are not supporting their cause. Private vehicles, buses and trains are expected to be affected by this.
