For someone who was awarded R12.1-million by the Eastern Cape department of health, Simamkele Maqwara has nothing to show for it.
The seven-year-old youngster, who was born with cerebral palsy at the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha, was awarded damages by the Mthatha High Court after sustaining injuries at birth. The money was paid over in October by the department of health.
Siyahluma suffered brain damage afterwards. In April 22 2015 the Mthatha High Court awarded a damages claim of R15.5-million to Siyahluma.
Her mother said she only received R5000 a month from a trust account set up after the award was made. Jiba said the attorney who represented them in court was Milile Martin Mpambiniso.
Said Jiba: “The money is not enough. I have to pay rent, buy her diapers and pay someone who has to look after her while I’m at work.”
The Mthatha High Court awarded mother of two Vuyokazi Fikeleni, 30, R8.6-million in March after she was left paralysed by complications during surgery at Mthatha Regional Hospital in May 2013, but said she was still waiting for her money.
Records provided by the department of health shows that Nonxuba was initially paid R1-million in November 2015, followed by another R7.6-million in March this year.
To date Nonxuba has paid only R110000 to Fikileni.
