Holomisa upbeat about the UDM in the upcoming poll

The United Democratic Movement’s (UDM) campaign trail will this morning hit Buffalo City Metro with a delegation of party leaders set to visit areas around East London and King William’s Town.

This morning party president Bantu Holomisa will kickstart the party’s election campaign with a visit to Nompumelelo Township in Beacon Bay and Mzamomhle in Gonubie.

UDM spokesman Mabandla Gogo said Holomisa would conduct walkabouts and door-to-door visits in these two townships, and also address community members.

Gogo said Holomisa would also visit Duncan Village and Potsdam where he would interact with communities in a bid to entice them into voting for his party in the upcoming local government elections.

Later today Holomisa will host a mini rally at the Moses Twebe Hall in Dimbaza with about 1000 supporters expected to attend.

The UDM’s top leadership visit to BCM comes hot on the heels of their campaign in the highly contested Nelson Mandela Bay Metro over the past week where the party also launched its manifesto.

A few months ago the UDM snatched an ANC ward during a by-election giving the party a much-needed boost for the upcoming elections.

In Nelson Mandela Metro they visited and engaged with communities in Motherwell, Greenbushes, Joe Slovo informal settlement, Zinyoka and Missionvale.

During a rally at the metro’s Lillian Ngoyi Hall on Youth Day, Holomisa told hundreds of party members that his party would do well in the upcoming elections due to factional infighting within ANC structures.

“Since (the) election day was promulgated, hardly a day passes without members of the ruling party violently protesting their own internal matters, such as disagreements over who should be on their list of councillor candidates, matters that have absolutely nothing to do with the citizens.

“Their violent actions affect and threaten ordinary peoples’ property and lives. In fact, people are dying through the barrel of a gun day-in and day-out, making South Africa a dangerous place to trust with economic investment,” he said.

Holomisa said the ruling party was “no longer a bankable project” and that there were no consequences for those who broke the law.

“We can no longer trust them with our monies and our livelihood. They have squandered their chances and must be heavily punished on August 3.”

Gogo said Holomisa would visit areas around Mthatha West tomorrow “where UDM enjoys a lot of support and where he will welcome over a hundred people from the ANC who are not satisfied by the list of councillors that are imposed in their areas”.

Holomisa ends his campaign on Monday with a meeting in the King Sabatha Dalindyebo municipality where he will introduce UDM councillor candidates for the OR Tambo region. — asandan@dispatch.co.za
