Church youth bring patients cheer

A group of 200 youngsters from different branches of the New Apostolic Church delivered donations and spread cheer to Frere Hospital patients this weekend, as part of national Youth Month.

The young people are from De Aar, Cradock, Richmond, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Mdantsane and East London.

Themed “We care”, the initiative saw the group bearing three water dispensers and a television set for the hospital, as well as baskets of fruit. They also sang beautiful hymns to uplift the patients’ spirits.

East London youth leader Ross Miles said the group embarked on a “do good” project every year to coincide with Youth Day.

This year they connected with Frere Hospital CEO Dr Rolene Wagner.

“Many of our members are not from wealthy backgrounds and can often not afford private healthcare, which means many of us make use of the services available at Frere,” said Miles.

Dr Wagner said she could tell that the visit touched the hearts of patients, who sometimes came from far and were unable to receive visitors.

“We also want to thank them for the gifts. We are proud to be part of their project, not only because our patients really enjoyed the visit but also because many of us come from similar backgrounds.

“It is always a privilege to join forces with communities that nurture the social conscience of the youth,” said Wagner. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
