Elderly PE man’s decomposing body was nibbled by dog

The decomposed body of an elderly man was found in the garage of his home in Port Elizabeth on Sunday. The body had been partially nibbled on by his pet dog.

The man‚ 79‚ whose name was withheld at the request of the family‚ is believed to have died of natural causes early last week.

His body was discovered at his Bridgemead home by his daughter at about 1pm after he failed to answer her calls over a number of days.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said an inquest docket would be opened and a post-mortem conducted.

“The deceased lived alone and had a history of illness‚ according to his family‚” Naidu said.

“It appears as if he was trying to get assistance from a neighbour when he collapsed in the garage.”

Naidu said the man had suffered from haemophilia‚ meaning his blood could not clot normally.

“It looks as if he cut himself – as there are traces of blood from the bedroom leading to the garage – and then tried to come out for assistance.

“Neighbours last saw him on Monday and his body is in an advanced state of decomposition.

“There are no signs of a break-in or a struggle.” – Tiso Black Star Group Digital/The Herald
