Two initiates die, scores rescued by task team in EC

Two initiates have been reported dead in the Eastern Cape since the start of the initiation season two weeks ago.

The initiates, one from Ngqeleni and one from Mthatha, died at the Nelson Mandela Central Hospital on Monday and Tuesday, shortly after they arrived at the hospital.
Cooperative governance and traditional affairs provincial spokesman Mamnkeli Ngam said that about 100 others including a 11-year-old have been rescued by the initiation monitoring task team. Some were sent to a rescued centre while others were admitted to various hospitals in the province – including Bhisho.
''At least three traditional surgeons have been arrested and are facing a charge of unlawful circumcision. Monitoring teams are crisscrossing the province monitoring situation in initiation schools,'' said Ngam.
He said they were still waiting for the post-mortems of the two dead initiates.
