ANC unveils its Eastern Cape mayoral candidates

The ANC in the Eastern Cape has officially announced and paraded its mayoral candidates for Metropolitan and District municipalities today.

ANC Eastern Cape provincial secretary introduced the eight mayors, at a press briefing held at the party's headquarters Calata House in King William's Town.  The mayors are of two metros and six district municipalities.

Introducing the candidates  Mabuyane said the team of mayors will continue and complement the work of the ANC prior the  August 3 elections.
"They will add more on the face of the ANC, that is our president, and add more on the ANC as a brand itself.  A brand that we all believe is stronger than anything we've ever seen on South African soil," Mabuyane said.
The eight mayors include;
*Sixolile Mehlomakhulu, as the Alfred Nzo District Municipality mayoral candidate. Mehlomakhulu is currently serving as the region's  ANC chairman and the Alfred Nzo Municipality deputy mayor.  He is also a former Cosatu leader in the region
*Winnie Nokhwezi Nxawa as the troubled and cash-strapped Amathole District Municipalitymayoral candidate.  She was part of the ANC Women's League leaderships that formed the league in Kimberley.  She is one of the longest serving ANC councillors in the Nkonkobe Local Municipality.
*Kholiswa Vimbayo as the Chris Hani District Municipality mayoral candidate.  Vimbayo currently serves as the region's ANC chairperson and Intsika Yethu Local Municipality mayor.
*Xola Pakati as the Buffalo City Metro Municipality mayoral candidate.  Pakati is the municipality's current deputy mayor and the Dr WB Rubusana region chairman.
*Zibonele Dumzela as the mayoral candidate for the Joe Gqabi District.  He currently serves as the region's ANC chairman and also the current mayor.
*Danny Jordan as the Nelson Mandela Metro mayoral candidate.  He is the current mayor, and was brought to the municipality as an intervention by the ANC provincial leaders to stabilise the municipality amid factional fights within the ANC regional structure.
*Nomakhozasana Meth will be retaining her position as the OR Tambo District municipality mayor.  She is also the current Eastern Cape Salga provincial chairwoman.
*Khunjuzwa Kekana will also be retaining her position as the Sarah Baartman District mayor.  She is a member of the regional executive committee.
Closing the press briefing Mabuyane said  the party will focus its energy on campaigning ahead of the local government elections.
"We want to consolidate our energies on the work at hand.  There will be mayors in every municipality that the ANC is in control of.  We wish our mayoral candidates all the best.  This is the work of the ANC, they are not being thrown there as the panaceas for municipality challenges.  We will work together with them," Mabuyane said.
