Hawks arrest two over 2012 taxi violence

The Hawks say they have arrested two men in connection with the 2012 taxi violence murders that took place in Mthatha.

The men are appearing in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court this afternoon for a formal bail application.

They have been identified as 44-year-old Vusimzi Bomvana and 46-year-old Themba Mrubata. They were arrested on June 15 and 17.

They are accused of shooting dead 38-year-old Nomvuyo Kozana on the night of October 3 2012. Nkozana's husband and taxi owner Mongezi was also seriously wounded during the incident.

The shooting was followed by another one on November 13 2012 where Zolile Dunga, 58, a taxi owner and an executive member of the Uncedo Service Taxi Association, was shot dead in an Mthatha street.

Eastern Cape Hawks spokeswoman Captain Anelisa Feni said although the murder weapon was recovered by police in December 2012 it was only now that they have made an arrest.

"The weapon was found in the unlawful possession of a 24-year-old man who then revealed that he had bought the weapon from Bomvana and Mrubata. Ballistic tests have positively linked the weapon to the murder of Dunga and Kozana," Feni said.
