Taking a selfie while casting a vote is against the law and will attract a penalty.

This is according to the Electoral Commission.

The IEC on Thursday said people were allowed to take selfies at the voting stations‚ but not with their marked ballot papers and in the ballot booth.

“It is against the law and there are penalties that apply‚” Mark Granelli from the IEC said.

Granelli could not say what penalty offenders could and would get.

“I can’t preempt the legal process. We want the youth on board ‚ but there’s just this one aspect we want to manage‚” Granelli said.

The IEC said it would be flighting adverts and put up posters to create an awareness among the public about this offence.
