Battered bodies found on dump

Police have found the bodies of two friends covered in rubble in an informal dumpsite on the outskirts of Scenery Park.

The dumpsite is located on the side of a gravel road leading to the Scenery Park water treatment plant.

Both men appear to have been bludgeoned to death with rocks. They are in their early 20s.

Police said yesterday the first body was found on Thursday at 3pm by children scavenging in the dumpsite for old toys.

The second body was discovered yesterday just after 1pm during a search by members of the East London K9 search and rescue unit.

The motive for the killings is still unknown.

Their identities were withheld yesterday as the men’s next-of-kin had not yet been informed of the discovery. Police have opened two separate murder dockets.

East London police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said the men were last seen alive last Tuesday afternoon. “Local children saw the first body last week Thursday while they were playing in the dumpsite.”

He is a male estimated to be between the ages of 20 and 25.

The deceased had severe head injuries, and he was covered in rubble when he was spotted.

On Friday a family in Scenery Park visited the police station to open a file of missing persons, they told police that their loved one was a friend of the deceased.

“We then went back to the area to search for him.”

Mqaka said the search continued yesterday with search and rescue police finding the second body 15m from where the first body was found on Thursday.

“The second man, who is estimated to be 25, was also found with severe head injuries.

“His body was hidden in rubble consisting of old building materials.

“His body was retrieved for safe keeping. He was wearing a blue jersey, grey T-shirt and black jeans,” Mqala said.

When the Daily Dispatch visited the scene yesterday police forensic specialists were seen combing the scene and counting the number of bloodied rocks that lay nearby.

There were blood spatters on the gravel road that leads to Khayelitsha township.

Mqala called on members of the community missing a relative to come forward to view the bodies.

She said anyone with information on the double murder could contact investigating officer Detective Warrant Officer Bongani Nkume on 043-745-6013. Any information would be treated as confidential, Mqala said.
