Members of the public have until 4pm on Friday to comment on or object to any of the 59 candidates vying to be Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s successor.

The ad hoc parliamentary committee had initially received 73 applications and nominations‚ but these were reduced to 59 after some nominees declined and others could not be reached to accept or decline their nomination.

Nominations that fell away included those of advocate Gerrie Nel‚ former president Thabo Mbeki‚ former first lady Graça Machel and former minister of finance Nhlanhla Nene.

The names of Western Cape High Court Judge Seraj Desai‚ law professor Pierre de Vos‚ advocates Dali Mpofu and Loyiso Mpumlwana‚ politician Phillip Dexter and author and former MP Pregs Govender were also on the list of 73.

“So far‚ the committee has received close to 100 comments. This number is likely to increase‚” said Parliament spokesperson Themba Gubula.

Gubula would not divulge what the comments or objections were.

“We are not in a position to divulge details of the comments or objections. These‚ especially objections‚ have to be verified first. In addition‚ once the comments and objections have been tallied‚ they will have to be presented to the members of the ad hoc Committee for them to decide how to handle them‚ going forward.”

Gubula said the committee would not be extending the deadline for the comments or objections to be submitted as the process was initially set down for only five days‚ but was extended by another three.

The committee will be meeting next Wednesday “to map the process‚ going forward”‚ Gubula said.
