A police officer has appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court in connection with the theft of a motor vehicle.

Constable Simnikiwe Ncwanwya, 37, was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly took a car from a man in the Quigney on Thursday and the car was found abandoned in NU 2 in Mdantsane.

The car keys were found in Ncanywa’s possession.

Yesterday magistrate Kevin von Bratt remanded Ncanywa on R1000 bail after the state did not oppose bail. The matter was postponed to August 23 for further investigation.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana yesterday confirmed the case.

“The complainant is a 39-year-old man from Quigney who alleged that the officer took his vehicle,” Tana said.

This was allegedly after the policeman asked the complainant to provide legal documents permitting him to be in the country.
