Buffalo City Metro employees yesterday downed tools and shut down the city’s Mdantsane depot demanding salary increases.

The strike comes after the metro paid out R75-million in April this year after workers demanded salary increases.

This time they wanted to be paid salaries two levels up from their current pay grades.

The action yesterday led to hundreds of ratepayers being locked outside the metro’s premises as angry workers protested.

Earlier in the week the SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) shop stewards met with staff members but failed to deliver a new strike action certificate as demanded by the workers.
