Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has told the people of ward 49 in Kanana‚ Hammanskraal‚ that social grants need to be increased in order to meet their basic needs.
This comes as a few residents took to the stage to express their concerns with problems ranging from poverty and housing to better service delivery.
“You worked hard for this place to be where it is but today when you raise concerns‚ they threaten you that if you vote for anyone else‚ they will take away your pensions. You must tell them before they take your pension‚ they must start with their mothers and grandmothers because they also get pensions‚” Malema said.
He said the ANC was going around telling people during their election campaigns in Tshwane that in fact it is the EFF that will take their pension away from them.
Malema rubbished the claims and said prominent ANC leaders couldn’t even count‚
“They are all over the place including here in Kanana and Hammanskraal dressed in their yellow regalia saying if Malema wins in the upcoming elections‚ he will take your pension money from old people and children.
“The only reason why the ANC says that‚ is because their party is being led by brainless people who can’t count… who count numbers as ‘thousands hundred thousand’‚ which you can’t understand the meaning of‚” said Malema in reference to President Jacob Zuma mixing up numbers during a previous State of the Nation Address.
Malema said the EFF believes social grants need to be increased‚ particularly for the elderly as they are usually guardians of children.
“We as the EFF have stated in writing that once we govern‚ we will increase your pension. Old people and disabled people should get R3‚000 and above because old people are the ones that take care of these homes in Kanana‚” he said.
The red beret leader said pensioners don’t misuse social grants as they spend it wisely.
“That is why we say their money should be increased because they don’t gamble with money‚ they are raising families with it‚” added Malema.
Malema was conducting a few community meetings in Tshwane on Thursday.
