A hundred pupils from various schools in Duncan Village and Amalinda Forest will have an easier road to travel after receiving brand new school shoes from generous donors.

SOLE OF THE PARTY: Yesterday the One Million School Shoes campaign reached East London where 100 children received brand new school shoes and stationery bagsThe shoe donation was the result of a collaboration between the Eastern Cape One Million School Shoes Campaign headed by staff from PNA stationery, Selborne College and Clarendon Girls’ High pupils.

Founder of OperationFeed-A-Child, a team that serves a full meal to more than 200 children every Saturday, Babalwa Mbuku, coordinated the initiative and identified the children who were eligible for the gift.

“You can see all the children here are hard up, some you can see are wearing torn shoes, others are wearing nonschool shoes, others even opt to go to school barefooted,” Mbuku said.

PNA general manager, Heinrich Fuls, said the initiative was a chance to interact with local schools and caregivers to meet the needs of the most vulnerable children in the community.

“We always want to show our support to campaigns or individuals who are involved in projects that seek to uplift impoverished communities,” Fuls said.

PNA donated 72 of the total amount of shoes but also donated schoolbags that included all basic stationery, including pens, pencils, rulers and exam pads.

Selborne College pupil, Junior Nxumalo, who was featured in the Daily Dispatch earlier this year after having donated new shoes to Vulamazibuko High School pupil Aviwe Zondani, managed to rope in his schoolmates to help.

Together they managed to collect school shoes and other shoes such as sneakers, pumps and slip-slops which were also handed over to various pupils yesterday.

Nxumalo said he wanted to heed the call encouraging the next generation to address social injustices, and to promote the importance of education. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
