Masters hockey action kicks into high gear today when the South African Masters tournament gets under way across East London this morning.

Sixty-six teams featuring over a thousand players will be taking to the fields across the city for three full days of hockey action.

Along with the provincial sides from around SA, an international flavour is also involved with teams from Zimbabwe, Namibia and Ghana also taking part, which adds to the interest.

“The Masters is a wonderful tournament for me and I think it is all about competing at this level, the camaraderie amongst the players and also about staying in the game for as long as you can,” said Eastern Province Masters chairman Andre le Roux.

Greenfields Park (Bunkers Hill Astro) and Clarendon Astro will be the main venues as they will feature both the men’s and women’s A division matches, amongst others.

However Stirling, Selborne and Cambridge astroturfs and grass fields will also be used to host the 330 matches that will be taking place over the next three days.

On the local front Border will be fielding four teams, two each in the men’s and women’s divisions while Eastern Province will be bringing five sides to take part – three on the men’s side and two on the women’s.

For Border their women’s A team are defending champs and they will be looking to retain their title in front of the home fans.

The Border women’s B team and the Border men’s team both also did well last year and will want to leave their mark.

“The guys have been training and working hard and honing their skills,” said Border men’s captain Greg Davis.

“Everyone is excited about us hosting the tournament and we would like to do well for our fans and win as many games as we can.

“We have some big games over the next few days and we are really looking forward to the Diggers game on Sunday afternoon at Bunkers Hill and the Southerns match on Monday at Selborne.”

The Border Invitational side playing in the men’s A division will feature a few under age players to make a competitive team, so although not playing for points they will want to put in a good performance and claim some positive results.

“Having home ground advantage is nice for us because we will have a good number of fans cheering for us and that should give us a lift and make a difference,” said Davis.

“This is a great tournament to have on the calendar every year. It is very popular and is constantly thriving and growing and we will enjoy having it here this year.”

Matches at the various venues start from 8.15am this morning.
