Geese return after 10-year exodus back to Kleinemonde

A Sunshine Coast woman who incubated and hand reared two Egyptian geese got the surprise of her life when they returned 10 years later looking for food.

Kleinemonde resident, Mal Bosch, yesterday said she immediately recognised the one goose she had named Boy when she saw it had a skewed left leg.

Bosch said she was amazed when Boy recently returned to her house looking for food.

"I saw an Egyptian goose fly over my garden last week and noticed it had one leg that hung oddly.

"I went outside and called him by his name and he flew straight at me."

Bosch said she was amazed and frightened when the massive bird came to her flapping its wings.

"He had grown very big since I last saw him, I was his mother for many months... he recognised my voice straight away."

Local bird expert and guide Ann Williams said people underestimated the intelligence they had.

"They remember where they were born and come back every year to the same place.

"It is like they have a built-in GPS."
