Meth hands over computers for her alpha mater in Ntabankulu

OR Tambo district mayor-elect Nomakhosazana Meth proved that absence does indeed make the heart grow fonder when she returned to her first school yesterday.

The charismatic Meth breezed into Mowa Senior Primary School which she had attended as a little rural girl raised in Mowa village more than 30 years ago. But like a parent returning home bearing gifts for their offspring, Meth brought with her 20 new desktop computers and 26 tablets for the school situated in one of the most underdeveloped and remote parts of Ntabankulu.

The donation was done under the auspices of the Cromwell Diko Foundation, launched last month in honour of Meth's late father. She serves as its patron.

She said she was hoping that the children who attend Mowa nowadays would be able to access knowledge at an early age unlike her who only used a computer for the first time when she was an adult trying to set up her own business.

"There were no computers when I was a pupil here," she said.

14-year-old Grade 7 pupil Yandiswa Mangala echoed Meth's sentiments saying a computer was an important tool in one's education nowadays.

School principal Bulelani Mayambela meanwhile said they were extremely excited about the donation as it would make education fashionable to hordes of Mowa village children.

He said the dropout rate was high as many children came from very poor families entirely dependent on the state's monthly social grants for survival.
