The Eastern Cape government has also sent heartfelt condolences to family of Reverend Makhenkesi  Stofile who died this morning.

Premier Phumulo Masualle this afternoon expressed his grief at the untimely passing of the former Eastern Cape Premier saying Stofile made an “immeasurable contribution in the democracy enjoyed today”.

Stofile served government in different capacities. He started off as chief whip in Parliament in 1994 and recently served as South Africa ambassador to Germany and Chancellor at the University of Fort Hare.

“With his incisive mind,  memory, sharp wit and easy humour, Bro Stof’s passing leaves  a huge void in our province, he was a true servant of the people who joined the struggle for liberation at a very young age and spent  a lot of time in prison fighting against the apartheid regime,” said Masualle.

He wished the Stofile family “strength and courage during this difficult time of loss” as they attempt to come to terms with the falling of a “great baobab tree”.

The office of Premier will update the public on the details of the memorial service and funeral after consultation with family and other stakeholders.
