The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) will on Tuesday launch the Marikana Massacre Amcu Trust Fund and a housing project to assist the families of those who died.

Tuesday — August 16 — marks the fourth commemoration of the day the South African Police Service opened fire on a crowd of striking mine workers at Marikana‚ leaving 34 dead.

A commemorative ceremony will be held at Marikana on Tuesday‚ and Amcu president Joseph Matunjwa on Monday said the trust was initiated in 2014 “to see justice being done and hope restored to those families”.

“This is a significant milestone in the journey that the union has embarked on to help the families of those killed before and on August 16‚ 2012‚” said Mathunjwa.

“We want to emphasise the importance of using the day to commemorate the fallen miners and to keep proceedings within that spirit and not turned into political point-scoring.

“We would like this commemoration to be seen within the ambit of the working class struggle despite any political inference to be drawn.”
