Alleged serial rapist denies all charges

An alleged serial rapist yesterday pleaded not guilty to a string of charges, including five counts of rape.

In the dock, Andile Jamani of Needs Camp denied any knowledge of the crimes of which he is accused.

Jamani told Judge Phakamisa Tshiki in the East London High Court that he did not even know the complainants.

Jamani faces five counts of rape, three counts of robbery with aggravated circumstances, two counts of housebreaking with intent to rape and one count of robbery.

Yesterday state advocate Nickie Turner said that, if found guilty, she would argue that Jamani be sentenced to life imprisonment.

In November 2010, Jamani allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl after he threatened to kill her.

He was allegedly with three other men with knives. They asked about he brother and then allegedly threatened to kill her. According to the charge sheet, she suggested they rape her instead of killing her.

The men led her to a bushy area where three men held her down while Jamani allegedly raped her. She was told it was payback for what her brother had done to their family.

Almost exactly a year later, Jamani allegedly raped the same girl. She had been walking with friends when Jamani allegedly appeared with two companions and demanded cellphones and money at knife point.

The girls walked on but Jamani ran after them, drew a knife and demanded sex. He forced the girls into a bushy area where he allegedly raped the girl while her friends ran away. He forced her to move to another spot and raped her again.

It is the state’s case that in November 2011, Jamani broke into the home of an elderly woman, throttled her and threatened to kill her. He allegedly raped the 77-year-old woman and stole her TV.

In September 2012 he allegedly broke into a house in Zwelitsha where a woman was asleep with younger siblings also in the house. He raped her.

Jamani is linked to all the cases by DNA.

The trial resumes today. — siyab@dispatch.co.za
