Memorial for mayoral candidate, wife

Hundreds of mourners are expected to descend on Tsolo tomorrow to attend the memorial service of slain ANC mayoral candidate for Mhlontlo municipality, Zolile Malangeni and his wife Thelma Ntombovuyo Malangeni.

Fifty-four-year-old Zolile and his wife were shot dead last Thursday in front of their grandchildren at their home in Mayaluleni Village in Tsolo.

This was the second murder of an ANC councillor in the province. The ANC provincial executive committee led by its chairman Phumulo Masualle and the party’s alliance partners are expected to attend the service to be held at Tsolo Junction today.

Zolile, who was the council speaker before 2011, was on the ANC’s proportional representative list and was earmarked for the position of mayor or council speaker.

Zolile was a senior manager at Ntinga Development Agency, which is attached to the OR Tambo district municipality

He was also the chairman of the ANC’s Walter Mzingisi Dazana branch in Mhlontlo’s Ward 7, and was hailed as a uniting figure of the branch and a “peace-loving comrade”.

The couple is survived by four children and two grandchildren. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
