Teen tells of pain in rape trial

A teenager told the East London High Court of his trauma and pain after the man who allegedly raped his sister demanded money and all he had was R5.

The boy cannot be named as it would identify his sister. He was testifying before Judge Phakamisa Tshiki in the trial of alleged serial rapist Andile Jamani.

Jamani is facing five counts of rape, three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, two counts of housebreaking with intent to rape and one count of robbery.

Jamani has pleaded not guilty to the crimes that date as far back as 2010.

The young man told the court that two men arrived at their home in the night and forced their way in. There were three siblings home alone at the time.

He said one of the men moved towards the younger siblings while the other “man-handled” his older sister. The man dragged his victim outside and there was silence, the court heard.

“Then the man who took my sister came back inside. He called me by name, and he demanded money. He wanted money and all I had was R5. I was deeply hurt,” he testified.

The sister was raped on September 29 2012 in Zwelitsha. She was 21 and her brother was 12 years-old at the time. The two men came in wielding knives.

From the witness stand yesterday, the brother identified Jamani as the man with the scar who had arrived at his home and raped his sister that night.

He said it was not the first time he had seen the man. He said he had seen him often before at a soccer field in Needs Camp.

The complainant also testified saying she could not identify her rapist, but remembered he had a scar on his face.

The trial resumes today where more complainants are expected to give their version of events. — siyab@dispatch.co.za
