Parliament's oversight committee on arts and culture will launch a probe into the removal of Mvezo from the Nelson Mandela Museum (NMM).

The legacy project in honour of the late statesman Nelson Mandela, initially set up by government to have three sites in Qunu, Mvezo and Bhunga, is in tatters.

Committee chairwoman Xoliswa Tom, a seasoned politician and former sports, recreation, arts and culture MEC, said the committee would look into the split.

The split follows a rift between Mandela’s grandson Mandla, and the NMM management. Mandla is the chief of Mvezo and an ANC member of parliament.

All developments in Mvezo were being administered by the Mvezo Traditional Council through the Mvezo Trust, Mandla said.

Tom said the committee would visit the NMM during the last week of September to conduct oversight visits. “Between now and that period, the council will have to give us a report that was requested in January 2014. When we come here we will ensure that we even visit these places to make our findings and recommendations.”

She said the issue was never “amplified” by the NMM management in parliament. This despite reports showing that the NMM management raised the rifts in 2010 and again in 2014. The committee, then headed by acting chairwoman Linda Moss, even requested the NMM council to submit a report on the situation. Tom expressed shock saying this had happened before she took over the reins. The matter would be reopened.

“As the committee when we follow up. We will listen to different people. The Nelson Mandela Museum council will have to give us a report and will check who else to talk to. If we need to speak to Mandla, we will do that. I wish you knew people in that committee and you see how we operate in that committee don’t have asinantsimi naNkosi .

“We stand for the truth and we want the right thing to be done.”

Tom said she was unaware of the feud between Mandla and the museum.

She said if she had known about it, she would have attended to it when she took the reins to head the committee.

Tom said she had not heard the matter being discussed within ANC circles either. — msindisif@dispatch.co.za / bonganif@dispatch.co.za
