Protesting students at the University of Fort Hare have burned down a building during riots in the early hours of this morning.
The protest at the university’s Alice campus were said to be over safety concerns at the campus.
The multimillion-rand Equicent Infrastructure Development building had millions worth of equipment and tools when it was burnt down.
About 30 plasma TVs, washing machines, computers, beds, stoves, chairs, beds, and maintenance tools, were part of items that were burnt to ashes.
Some students were in class when DispatchLIVE visited the campus. The glass at the main gate was broken.
There were no police on campus this afternoon and the university was not immediately available for comment. No students were arrested.
Meanwhile, there has been no learning at the university's East London campus as students protested over internal issues including Res fees and other financial issues affecting students. Vice Chancellor, Mvuyo Tom is about to address students.
