Ever since Marlon Brando sat astride a Harley-Davidson in the 1953 movie The Wild One, the motorbike brand has become iconic of edgy street glamour and now East Londoners can get a taste of riding in a pack of Harleys.

On Sunday, six gleaming new Harley-Davidsons will roll into town on a trailer where they will be exhibited at the East London Bowling Club in Arcadia.

All eager riders will need is a helmet, a valid licence for a 125cc or higher motorcycle and an indemnity form – and they will be able to roar onto the road and make their Harley dream come true.

Six bikes form part of the roadshow and will make their way via a similar stop in Port Elizabeth from the new dealership in Knysna.

“Anyone who has ever wanted a Harley, but not been able to try one out will have the unique opportunity of a test ride,” said Harley-Davidson Garden Route dealer principal Jimmy Keefer.

Bikes on show will be 2016 models with names that conjure up the freedom of the open road with a touch of outlaw romance.

They are Sportster Forty-eight, Dyna Wide Glide, Touring Street Glide, Touring Road Glide, Touring Road King classic and Touring Ultra Limited.

Prices for the glimmering mean machines range from R152000 to R340000 for those who want to make their association with a bike more permanent.

Demo outrides will cover a 10km route and will give riders the thrill of pack-riding. The ride will include the motorway as well as some town riding.

“When non-Harley bikers ride, they ride in single file with the fastest guys in the front, but Harley bikers ride in formation and so you have the sensation of riding with the roar of Harleys all around you,” said Harley-Davidson East London Club events co-ordinator Pierre Gonneau.

Gonneau said the demo would be an opportunity for people who have fantasised about riding a Harley to realise their dreams.

“Ask anyone who rides and they will say ‘one day when I’m big I’ll get a Harley’.”

Gonneau said riders wanting to take a pillion rider on the outride should remember to bring an extra helmet and to wear suitable motorbike wear.

“No shorts or slops, please,” he said.

Sunday’s event will include live entertainment and food and refreshments will be available from the club and two bars.
