Man arrested with rhino horns at ORT due in court

A man arrested with three rhino horns at OR Tambo International Airport last week is due to appear in Kempton Park Magistrates Court on Monday.

He was‚ Activists for Animals Africa said‚ arrested “the day before President Jacob Zuma delivered the opening address at the CITES 17th Conference of the Parties in Johannesburg” on Saturday.

“The horns weighing 9.4kg were found through an X-ray of his bag‚ concealed in a box‚” a statement said.

The man — who is believed to be a Chinese national and is currently being held at the Edenvale police station – allegedly told authorities that he obtained the horns in Swaziland.

DNA testing will be conducted on them.

Albi Modise‚ spokesperson for Minister of Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa‚ said of the arrest: “I think it begins to show how effective our systems are in terms of flushing out individuals who are linked or are found to be linked to illegal wildlife trade practices.”
