SRC calls meeting to finalise demands‚ as Wits remains closed

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) student representative council (SCR) will tell students about its demands on Monday as “activities remain suspended until further notice” following the discovery of petrol bombs on campus.

In a series of tweets on Sunday night‚ Wits SRC ?@WitsSRC instructed: “Students are to mobilize& meet at Solomon House at 12pm #FeesMustFall.”

It also told its “task teams” to meet two hours prior to this.

Solomon Mahlangu House was the rallying point for the resumption of protests at Wits last Monday‚ following the fees increase announcement by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande.

The SRC posted the intention of Monday’s gathering: “We will be finalizing the internal demands and a specific line of march will be provided #FeesMustFall”.

“It’s very convenient that petrol bombs were found just after the university has sent a threat that it will suspend all academic activities and close down residences.

“I mean we were never told who found those petrol bombs and the exact location‚ that is quite convenient‚” said incoming Wits SRC president Kefentse Mkhari.

He was speaking to Tiso Black Star Group Digital while waiting for a meeting with faith-based organisations as well as parents to start.

“I think this is a strategy for the university to try and detour and de-mobilise students from this movement‚” said Mkhari.

The student leaders organised the meeting to call for the participation of these stakeholders in their fight for free education.

On Saturday‚ the university sent out a statement saying: “The University can confirm that three petrol bombs were found on the Braamfontein campus today. They were found behind a building close to a fence. The police are currently investigating the matter. All University activities remain suspended until further notice‚” said Shirona Patel‚ Wits head of communications.

On Friday‚ hundreds of students marched to Cosatu House to hand over a memorandum of demands to the leaders of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu).
