Past and present pupils celebrated Mzomhle’s High School’s 50th birthday yesterday along with the Mdantsane community.

Education MEC Mandla Makupula launched the celebrations which were also attended by representatives from the Buffalo City Metro Mayor’s office and prominent alumni.

The school was established in 1966.

Makupula welcomed the milestone and said Mzomhle was a “relatively” good school with a pass rate of just over 60%.

“Today I was supposed to be visiting schools that had been burned down by pupils in Libode but because celebrations of this magnitude I could not miss today,” he said.

“This school has been a beacon of hope in a sea of wilderness and it was the one school that everyone wanted to attend back in its time, and it is with pleasure to see that, although the school took a dip in 2014 after a 69.8% pass rate in 2013, it improved last year.”

Makupula reminded parents and the community who attended the celebrations about the importance of education and the responsibility parents, teachers and pupils collectively played in the education of children.

Former pupil Zamikhaya gXabe said the celebrations, expected to continue throughout the week concluding with a gala dinner at the City Hall on Friday evening, aimed to unite the community and reflect on what the school had accomplished. It would also look at ways past pupils could take the school to new heights going forward.

“The school has produced more than 50000 pupils over the years, most which are successful,” said gXabe.

“Throughout this week we aim to get at least 1000 of our past pupils who are willing to roll up their sleeves and say that they are willing to commit R100 every month for one year towards the school’s newly registered Mzomhle development Trust, which was discussed at the 1999 reunion.”

gXabe said the trust aimed to rebuild the school and create bursary opportunities for disadvantage pupils.

School principal Malusi Koltana said that on his appointment he was told that he would be taking over the former university of Mdantsane and was tasked with returning the school to its former glory.

“It has been wonderful for me to learn about the rich history of the school and everyone that it has produced, but I also don’t want to dwell much on its history, but more on how I’m going to leave my mark, and how we as people currently at the school now can take it to greater heights,” he said.

Koltana encouraged past pupils and friends of Mzomhle to join in the school’s festivities and book tickets for the gala dinner. For more information call: Zamikhaya gXabe on 0604247722 or Malusi Koltana on 0848444009. — mbalit@dispatch.co.za
