African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela says the party needs to visit Marikana and Nelson Mandela Bay to “fix things”.

Speaking to thousands of ANC Women’s League members at her birthday celebration at the Orlando Gardens in Soweto on Monday‚ Madikizela-Mandela said she will lead the visit to these areas.

“When I am well‚ I will come with you to Marikana as women. We need to go and visit all these areas they say are no-go areas‚ there is no such thing here in South Africa‚” she said to loud cheers from members.

The leading party lost support following the Marikana massacre where 34 miners were shot and killed by police officers during a strike over wages.

“We need to go there and cry together with those people. I will see to it that we organise ourselves and go there‚” Madikizela-Mandela added.

She also said the ANCWL needs to visit Nelson Mandela Bay where‚ for the first time‚ it has lost the metro’s municipality to the Democratic Alliance.

“We also need to go to Nelson Mandela Bay and talk to those people.”

Winnie Mandela turned 80 years old on Monday. The milestone has been marked with birthday celebrations held in Cape Town and Gauteng since the beginning of the month.
