Protesting University of Fort Hare students defied their vice chancellor’s instructions to return to class this morning.

Mvuyo Tom, the university’s vice-chancellor, issued a letter to students yesterday instructing them to return to class today, failing which, they would be evicted from their residences.

Instead of returning to class, the students demanded the university allow them to have a mass meeting within the premises of the East London campus. The university refused.

In a mini-mass meeting earlier today -  in the presence of armed police - students decided that they would not return to class until the management gave them a venue to hold their mass meeting.

Students then dispersed to their respective residences.
