The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is not saying a word about the salary package that will be paid to its new head of corporate affairs‚ Hlaudi Motsoeneng.
Motsoeneng attended the presentation on Thursday of the broadcaster’s annual results‚ which confirmed a net loss of R411-million for the 2015/16 financial year.
SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said he could not disclose details about Motsoeneng’s remuneration package.
“No‚ we can’t answer that. Salaries of people are an internal labour issue. Even me‚ I don’t know .”
It was revealed in Parliament last year that Motsoeneng’s salary amounted to R3.7-million – a package which had been increased three times thanks to an abuse of power‚ according to damning findings made previously by the public protector.
Motsoeneng refused to be drawn this week on reports that he was paid a bonus of between R10- and R11-million.
The public broadcaster is also keeping mum about what it cost to send two executives to a television networking conference at the Hilton Mauritius Resort and Spa‚ which started on the Indian Ocean island on Thursday.
Motsoeneng was scheduled to join Communications Minister Faith Muthambi in Mauritius to address African broadcasters at an event called NexTV CEO Africa 2016.
He was expected to speak to CEOs and top executives in the technology and media world about the SABC’s push to broadcast local content‚ but was replaced by another executive.
Asked by the Sunday Times at a press conference this week about his planned trip to Mauritius‚ Motsoeneng gave an assurance that it would be money well spent.
Kganyago said that former group executive of corporate affairs Bessie Tugwana – whose post has been filled by Motsoeneng – went to the conference in his place. She was accompanied by the group executive for television‚ Nomsa Philiso.
In light of Treasury clamping down on government spending and‚ for example‚ rejecting a request by Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba for his staff to fly business class‚ Tiso Black Star Group Digital asked Kganyago if the SABC executives flew economy or business class to Mauritius.
“That is really irrelevant as far as we are concerned. They fly in relation to the policies of the organisation. These policies are not in the public domain.”
He added that for safety reasons it would not be wise to make public the pair’s travel plans.
The Hilton Mauritius Resort and Spa describes itself as the “perfect location to mix business with pleasure” with landscaped gardens‚ an outdoor whirlpool and a spa.
There will be a gala dinner at the conference on Thursday and an “after-party around the infinity pool and beach” on Friday.
Muthambi was invited to give a keynote address at the opening session of the two-day summit about the digital television revolution in Africa.
NexTV CEO Africa 2016 is described as an “exclusive event that brings together the Anglophone and Francophone markets of sub-Saharan Africa and offers a unique opportunity to discuss strategic ventures‚ regulatory issues and will be a fantastic accelerator for business and for lobby in the broadcasting industry”.
