Today marks exactly five years since two members of a Greenfields family died in a vicious attack during an armed robbery at their home, but to date no arrests have been made.

It was Saturday October 1 2011 when three people entered a Greenfields house and opened fire, shooting Dion van der Merwe, 51, wife Evadne van der Merwe, 50, and her father Norman Hewitt, 70. Dion and Hewitt died later in hospital.

Van der Merwe, who fought for his life for 12 days, died a day after his 12th wedding anniversary to Evadne.

The three thugs fled with R750 and have never been found.

Van der Merwe was shot in the head execution style.

Evadne, who was also shot in the head, survived.

In an interview with the Dispatch yesterday, she said, “I commended him at the funeral for being so brave.

“He fought to make it to our 12th anniversary before losing the fight. He was a very brave man.”

She is disappointed that the criminals who killed her loved ones have still not been brought to book five years on.

According to Evadne, the police last contacted her about the investigation three years ago.

“Their last statement to me was ‘we are still scouting the area’.

“I would like to see a map showing exactly which areas they have scouted in the past five years.”

The attack changed her life drastically, not only leaving her mourning those closest to her but leaving her partially blind and brain damaged as well. She has not been able to recall the incident or moments leading up to the attack since she had brain surgery.

The damage to her once excellent eyesight meant a demotion at work, Harry’s Printers, from photos editor to receptionist.

“All I want from the police is answers.

“I am not alone in this because there are a lot of people who were murdered their killers still out there.”

Provincial police spokeswoman Colonel Sibongile Soci said the case had been handed to the Hawks.

Hawks spokeswoman Anelisa Feni said the unit was still gathering information regarding the investigation. — malibongwed@dispatch.co.za
