UPDATE: Rhodes SRC president reportedly arrested in Gauteng

Rhodes University SRC president Gift Sandi was reportedly arrested in Johannesburg where he was attending a high-level stakeholder meeting to address fee protest at universities.

The university yesterday confirmed that he had been arrested but did not say what for.

“He was released this morning without being charged and the university is of the view that a mistake has been rectified,” said the statement.

The meeting was yesterday attended by vice-chancellors and representatives from SRCs from universities across the country as well as President Jacob Zuma and his Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande.

The Rhodes SRC has also issued a statement on social media confirming Sandi’s arrest but warned that people should not heed rumours around his arrest.

The statement said the SRC had received confirmation that all charges against Sandi had been dropped and he had not needed to appear in court.

The statement also failed to say why Sandi was arrested.

“At this time we would like to remind the student body that the details surrounding his arrest have not been confirmed and at this stage, rumours surrounding his arrest are hearsay.”

Police had not commented at the time of writing.
