The 31 students arrested at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University on Wednesday appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Friday and were released on bail.

Despite their defence team asking that the students be released on warning‚ Magistrate Tandeka Mashiyi said they faced serious charges and set bail at R100.

The students face various charges‚ including public violence and malicious damage to property.

A large crowd has gathered outside the court awaiting the students’ release.
