Six nods for Emtee in SA’s hip-hop awards

Matatiele rapper Emtee is leading the Eastern Cape pack of nominees for this year’s SA Hip-Hop Awards next month.

Emtee is joined by trufm’s Trusenz and Yahkeem, who have been nominated again in the King of the East category for their contribution to the genre in the province.

Emtee has been nominated in six categories including song of the year for his hit Pearl Thusi; best album; best male; best collabo for Kuze Kuse with Fifi Cooper; best video for Couldn’t with A-Reece; and best remix for Roll Up (Re-Up) featuring AKA and Wizkid.

Other accolades include two South African Music Awards, four Metro FM Awards and a recent nomination for the MTV Africa Music Awards.

The SA Hip-Hop Awards celebrate the biggest and best contribution to the development of the country’s hip-hop music. Nominees are put forward for the title of king of their provinces.

Trusenz and Yahkeem have been nominated alongside Vukani Community Radio’s Snesh Nota.

Trusenz will be defending his title as the current “King of the East”.

The winner for this category is determined by a panel of judges.

Yahkeem held the title in 2013 and 2014. “I have been nominated five times and won it twice, it’s a plus for me.

“No matter what happens we keep pushing and creating platforms for the arts and growing it,” he said.

This year the Port Elizabeth-based rapper quit his 9 to 5 job to pursue music fulltime. One of his goals is to ensure that artists generate income through their craft in the province.

The SA Hip-Hop Awards, now in its fifth year, will be broadcast on MTV Base (DSTV Channel 322) which is the exclusive broadcast partner.

The ceremony is on December 14 at The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, and will be hosted by comedienne Nina Hastie and jack-of-all-trades Batsile Boywonder Ramasodi.

This year’s ceremony will also honour musician Cassper Nyovest, who has filled The Dome – a 20000-seater venue in Johannesburg – and the 40000-seater Orlando Stadium in Soweto. The Family Tree Records owner has been nominated for hustler of the year category alongside Khuli Chana, Proverb and Gigi LaMayne.

Other rappers nominated alongside Nyovest are AKA, Riky Rick, Khuli Cha-na and Kwesta. The show will premiere on MTV Base on December 26. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
