The two men in custody in connection with the theft of safety deposit boxes at First National Bank are security guards‚ according to the Hawks.

Norman Moeli and Maredi Letsoalo‚ aged 44‚ who are facing charges of conspiracy to commit housebreaking and theft at an FNB branch in Randburg‚ appeared in court on Monday.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said they are “two Chubb Security Personnel”‚ and they were arrested by the National Bureau of Illegal Firearms Control and Priority Violent Crimes last Thursday.

“It is alleged that the suspects… with their accomplices conspired to rob the bank using their company resources‚” ‚” Mulamu said.

“They apparently drilled the wall to gain access to the bank volt. About 362 safety deposit boxes containing valuables such as firearms‚ jewellery‚ money‚ and documents‚ were stolen.”

Officers “nabbed the unsuspecting Letsoalo in Winterveldt‚ Pretoria and Moeli in Centurion on Thursday morning”.

They made a brief appearance in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday and are due back in court on February 13 for a bail application hearing.

The matter was also postponed for the state to verify Moeli’s address.

The arrests followed the brazen theft of safety deposit boxes at FNB branches last year.

Thieves penetrated a vault at FNB Parktown on New Year’s Eve and took R1.7-million in cash and valuables from about 30 safety deposit boxes.

This followed a theft pulled off at the FNB branch in Randburg on December 18‚ when thieves made off with 360 safety deposit boxes after tying up the lone security guard on duty and then using a jackhammer to gain access.

Two days later‚ police found 252 of the boxes dumped in a field. They had been forced open and emptied of jewellery‚ Krugerrands and other valuables‚ with only documents left behind.
