Murder charge possible after baby boy found in pit toilet

A postmortem examination of a new-born baby dumped in a long-drop toilet in Lindelani north of Durban will reveal whether or not the boy’s first moments were also his last.

Police Search and Rescue personnel were called to the scene on Wednesday night after it was established that the boy‚ carried to full term‚ had been discarded in a pit filled with effluent.

Police are investigating a case of concealment of birth — and if the boy had been alive when he was dumped‚ the case will change to one of murder.

It is understood that a heavily pregnant woman was seen entering the toilet with a bucket and after she emerged‚ blood was seen on the seat.

In the dark‚ officers were unable to safely enter the subterranean toilet to retrieve the body.

They returned on Thursday morning‚ and managed to pull the lifeless body from the pit toilet.

A 20-year-old woman was arrested at the scene.
