As expected, education gets the biggest chunk of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan’s R1.5-trillion budget, with a huge part going to basic education.

Economic affairs and agriculture received the second biggest allocation at R241.6-billion.

Defence and public safety came in third and have been offered R198-billion in the 201617 budget.

University subsidies get R31.6-billion, while the National Student Financial Aid Scheme will get R15.3-billion.

Gordhan said the quality of South Africa’s schools and further education institutions “is at the heart of our commitment to our children’s future”.
