Walter Sisulu University’s (WSU) Buffalo City campus has been closed until further notice due to the ongoing student protest.
In a memorandum circulated to staff and students, the university’s vice-chancellor (VC) Rob Midgley said the students’ intimidation of staff had resulted in continued disruption of normal administrative and academic activity on campus.
The students from the Buffalo City Campus, which has sites at Chiselhurst, Potsdam, College Street and Cambridge Street, as well as the Heritage and Absa Stadium, have been boycotting class for almost two weeks.
Earlier this week the university requested students return to class by June 1. However, the students intensified the protest by going to all campus sites to ensure no classes were taking place.
Some of the students’ grievances include:
- Failure of some students to receive National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) meal and food allowances;
- Poor living conditions at residences; and
- Lack of security at some residences.
