Burglary ‘may be inside job’

Thieves have broken into a second school in just two weeks in the area and made off with meat, a grass cutter and three laptops in what is suspected to be an inside job on Tuesday.

Zwelodumo Senior Secondary School in Viedgesville became the latest school to be broken into after Ikwezi Community School was burgled and torched last week.

It is the third time Zwelodumo has been broken into in six years, with computers and laptops stolen on each occasion.

Although nothing was stolen at the Ikwezi, Zwelodumo principal Bhedeshani Dwabayo said among the things stolen from the school was a brand new information technology kit received earlier this year from the MTN Foundation.

Three offices were broken into.

“I was called by the school’s security early on Wednesday morning and he told me that what had happened was he heard noises around 10pm, but when he tried to step out of his guardhouse to check, he found the thieves had padlocked him inside and he was only able to alert me when his shift ended and the other guard came to open for him,” said Dwabayo.

He said the guard said he had left his phone at home that night and could not call for help.

“These people had time, and clearly this is someone who knows this school well because they knew exactly which offices and classes to break into. They knew where the valuables are. I cannot rule out an inside job,” said Dwabayo.

Mthatha police spokeswoman Captain Dineo Koena confirmed that they were investigating the cases. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
